Kansas roads could turn slick in the next several hours as mixed precipitation spreads across central and northeast parts of the state. Light snow and a thin glaze of ice are expected to develop by midday and continue into early Monday, creating hazardous travel before the morning commute.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has extended a Winter Weather Advisory until 9 a.m. Monday for much of north central, northeast, and east central Kansas, including Topeka, Manhattan, Junction City, Marysville, and Abilene. Cloud, Ottawa, Republic, and Washington counties remain under the advisory as well.

Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow and sleet, along with a light glaze of ice. While totals remain modest, even minor accumulations can create slick bridges and untreated roads. I-70, U.S. 75, and rural highways across Shawnee, Riley, and Pottawatomie counties could see reduced traction, especially late tonight into early Monday.

Temperatures hovering near freezing increase the risk of icy patches. This is the time of year when brief melting during daylight can refreeze after sunset, leading to patchy black ice. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and check Kansas 511 for the latest road conditions.

Conditions improve gradually after 9 a.m. Monday as precipitation tapers. However, additional March systems remain possible later this week.

If you’re traveling early Monday, plan extra time and use caution. Are roads already turning slick in your area?
