Wichita, KS – Summer-like heat is taking hold across central and southern Kansas this week, with temperatures soaring dangerously close to triple digits on Wednesday, particularly in cities near the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, forecast highs on Wednesday are expected to reach 98°F in Pratt and 97°F in Harper, while Wichita could see 94°F. Areas such as Hutchinson and Winfield are also forecast to climb into the mid-90s. The unusually high temperatures mark a sharp contrast to seasonal averages, prompting weather officials to urge residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.
By Thursday, temperatures will begin to ease slightly, dropping into the mid-80s across much of the region with breezy conditions expected. Friday will remain mostly sunny with highs between 82°F and 87°F, providing temporary relief. However, weather models suggest a 20% chance of thunderstorms developing late Saturday, especially in southeastern Kansas.
Residents should take precautions against heat-related illnesses and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and young children. Drivers are also advised not to leave pets or children in vehicles, as cabin temperatures can rise rapidly in extreme heat.
This stretch of near-record warmth is expected to break heading into next week, with cooler air patterns on the horizon.
