Dodge City, KS – Isolated strong storms are expected to develop across northwest and north central Kansas late this afternoon and into the evening, with the highest risk for damaging winds and localized heavy rain along key travel corridors.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, scattered storms could form between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday, primarily along Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 96. Some of these storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and periods of heavy rainfall, though the overall threat level remains low, categorized at Level 1 – Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms.
Storm activity is anticipated to be widely scattered and will form along a weak frontal boundary moving through northwest Kansas. The region’s current setup suggests that while severe storms are not expected to be widespread, isolated areas may still experience impactful weather conditions.
Forecast models suggest minimal risk for tornadoes or large hail; however, residents and travelers in affected zones – including areas near Colby, Hays, Russell, and Great Bend – should stay alert and monitor real-time updates. The primary concern will be for high wind potential and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
The National Weather Service recommends reviewing severe weather plans and ensuring multiple methods of receiving alerts, especially for those with outdoor activities or travel plans during the evening hours.
