Wichita, KS – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across much of Kansas beginning Wednesday and lasting into Thursday morning, with Wichita and surrounding areas facing the highest risk for significant rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the potential for widespread heavy rain is increasing, with probabilities reaching over 90% in south-central Kansas. Wichita, Hutchinson, and Coffeyville all have a greater than 90% chance of receiving at least one inch of rain. Forecast models also show a strong likelihood of more than two inches in parts of the region, with areas including Eureka, Chanute, and Coffeyville facing probabilities above 80%.

Rain chances rise sharply Wednesday afternoon and continue through Wednesday night, when storms could deliver the heaviest downpours. The Weather Service notes the risk of localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas if rainfall totals exceed two inches. Thunderstorms may also bring gusty winds and lightning.

The extended forecast shows showers and storms lingering into Thursday before conditions gradually improve. Wichita is expected to see highs in the low- to mid-70s during the storm period, with overnight lows in the 60s. Friday will bring drier conditions and partly cloudy skies.

Residents are advised to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and prepare for possible travel disruptions. Motorists should use caution during periods of heavy rainfall, as visibility could be reduced and roadways may flood quickly.

Emergency managers recommend checking sump pumps, clearing storm drains, and securing outdoor items ahead of the storms.
