Wichita, Kansas – Scattered storms and heavy rain could trigger localized flooding across central and south-central Kansas today, especially near the Kansas Turnpike, where rainfall rates may spike by mid-morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, strong thunderstorms are expected to redevelop this afternoon with wind gusts reaching 50 mph. Counties at risk include Sedgwick, Reno, Butler, and Saline, where low-lying roads and urban areas may experience standing water through tonight.

Storm chances increase again Thursday into Thursday evening as tropical moisture lingers across the region. Flooding could worsen in areas already saturated, with heavier pockets of rain possible near El Dorado, Hutchinson, and Winfield. Strong downburst winds could damage tree limbs and power lines.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, keep cell phones charged in case of outages, and monitor alerts from emergency officials. Spotter activation is not expected at this time, but conditions may change rapidly.

The flood threat continues into early next week, with storm chances lingering through Monday.
