Wichita, Kan. – An isolated thunderstorm could develop across parts of Kansas this afternoon through early evening, but the bigger concern arrives late week as dangerous heat returns. Highs will push into the upper 90s by Friday and Saturday, with heat indices reaching 100 to 105 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, Wednesday and Thursday will remain mostly dry, with highs climbing steadily into the mid-90s. Friday’s heat surge will push heat index values into triple digits for much of central, south central, and southeast Kansas. Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, and Emporia will see highs in the mid- to upper 90s Friday and Saturday, with overnight lows staying in the mid-70s, offering little relief. Prolonged exposure to this heat could increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for those without adequate cooling.
Thunderstorm chances return by Sunday night into Monday, potentially offering some relief from the heat. Until then, officials advise taking heat safety seriously and preparing for the hottest stretch of weather in weeks.
