Wichita, Kansas – Drivers across central and south central Kansas could encounter sudden downpours and gusty winds over the next few hours as scattered storms develop and intensify before 11 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through 11 p.m., with the strongest cells capable of producing wind gusts over 40 mph, brief heavy rainfall, and small hail. The primary area of concern stretches from Great Bend to Salina, with storms drifting southeast toward Hutchinson and areas just northwest of Wichita.
Communities along K-96 and I-135, including Hutchinson and McPherson, may see quick bursts of rain that reduce visibility and create slick roads during the late evening hours. In Salina and Great Bend, isolated storms could produce small hail and gusty winds strong enough to move unsecured outdoor items.
While coverage remains scattered, any storm could briefly intensify, creating localized hazards for drivers and outdoor activities. Emergency managers advise having multiple ways to receive weather alerts as conditions can change quickly.
Storm activity is expected to taper after 11 p.m., though additional updates may be issued if stronger cells develop or persist later into the night.
