Wichita, KS – A calm, cloudless night is setting up across the Sunflower State — the perfect recipe for a hard freeze by dawn. The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 AM CDT to 8 AM CST Sunday for much of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, including Wichita, Newton, El Dorado, Parsons, and Coffeyville.

Lows are expected to bottom out between 28°F and 30°F, with the coldest readings in sheltered rural valleys and open fields. Sub-freezing temperatures will bring a definitive end to the growing season, posing a risk to any remaining crops, flowers, or unprotected outdoor plants. Frost will likely coat rooftops, vehicles, and fields by sunrise.

Residents should cover tender plants, disconnect and drain hoses, and wrap exposed pipes to prevent burst damage. Pet owners are also urged to provide shelter for animals, as wind chills could dip into the low 20s early Sunday.

Road conditions will remain clear, but drivers heading out early — particularly along I-35, US-400, and Highway 54 — may encounter patchy frost on windshields.

After the freeze, skies will stay bright through Sunday afternoon, with highs recovering into the upper 50s. Mild weather continues Monday, followed by a weak midweek system that may bring light rain to eastern Kansas.

By the end of the week, temperatures will moderate slightly, but this weekend marks a turning point — the first widespread November freeze for Wichita and surrounding counties.
