Wichita, Kansas – A brief taste of summer heat will give way to a stormy start to the workweek as a cold front pushes across Kansas. After a breezy Sunday with highs in the mid-80s, thunderstorms are expected to develop by Monday afternoon and linger into Tuesday, bringing gusty winds and locally heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, showers and thunderstorms will increase across central and north-central Kansas Monday into Tuesday. The strongest cells may deliver wind gusts up to 50–65 mph and small hail. Widespread severe storms are not anticipated, but any strong storm could still disrupt travel, especially along I-35 and U.S. 400. Drivers should plan extra time for slick roads and brief visibility drops during heavier rain bands.

By midweek, cooler and calmer weather will return, setting the stage for ideal early October conditions—great for outdoor events, fall markets, and pumpkin patch visits. Highs will hover in the mid-70s Wednesday and Thursday before climbing back into the 80s late week.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose decorations and check drainage areas before the storms arrive. If you have outdoor plans or are traveling early Tuesday, monitor NWS Wichita updates and local advisories. Power flickers are possible in stronger cells, so charging devices overnight and having flashlights ready is wise.
