Wichita, KS – Widespread dense fog is creating hazardous travel conditions across eastern and southeast Kansas this morning, with visibility dropping under a quarter-mile in some locations, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Patchy fog is also beginning to spread westward into portions of central and south-central Kansas.

According to the agency, the fog is expected to linger through 10 a.m., with some areas experiencing sudden and significant reductions in visibility over very short distances. The areas most affected include communities from Emporia to Chanute and Coffeyville, with patchy fog extending toward Salina, Hutchinson, Great Bend, and Medicine Lodge.

Forecasters warn that dense fog can lead to rapid visibility drops, especially along rural roads, low-lying areas, and river valleys. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra following distance during the morning commute. Even brief pockets of dense fog may create potentially dangerous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service notes that fog development early this morning is being fueled by calm winds and lingering low-level moisture. As daytime heating increases, visibility is expected to gradually improve, with conditions lifting later in the morning.

Drivers traveling across the eastern half of the state should plan for delays and exercise caution, particularly in the Wichita metro, Emporia region, Southeast Kansas corridor, and the Flint Hills.
