Chanute, Kansas – Drivers across southeast Kansas are waking up to dangerous travel conditions Thursday morning, as dense fog blankets the region and visibility drops below a quarter-mile in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the fog will persist through about 9 a.m., affecting cities including Chanute, Coffeyville, Eureka, and surrounding counties. The NWS warns that poor visibility could lead to delays and increased risk of accidents, especially on rural highways and roads like U.S. 169 and U.S. 400.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use low-beam headlights when driving through fog-covered areas. Schools and businesses in Montgomery, Neosho, and Greenwood counties may experience late arrivals due to the morning slowdown. First responders also advise keeping a safe following distance and avoiding sudden stops.
This type of early May fog event is not unusual in Kansas, where cool overnight temperatures and lingering moisture often combine to create hazardous morning commutes. While no widespread road closures have been reported, local officials continue to monitor the situation.
Visibility is expected to improve by mid-morning, but drivers should remain cautious. Further advisories may be issued if fog persists or redevelops in low-lying areas.
