Dodge City, KS — A dangerous mix of soaring heat and strong winds has elevated fire weather concerns across southwest Kansas through Saturday evening, prompting caution from state and local officials.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, critical fire weather conditions are in place through 7 a.m. Sunday. Areas west of Route 283, including Garden City, Ulysses, and Liberal, face the highest threat. Gusty winds paired with low humidity may allow fires to spread rapidly if ignited.

Temperatures across the region are expected to climb well into the 90s, with some areas, like Syracuse and Ulysses, hitting 98°F. This kind of heat is unusually early for mid-April and is intensified by a downslope wind pattern from higher elevations.

Residents are urged to avoid using open flames, power tools, or anything that might spark outdoors. Hydration and frequent breaks in shaded areas are strongly recommended for those working or spending time outside.

While southwest Kansas is no stranger to heat, the combination of fire risk and summer-like temperatures creates a rare early-season hazard. Emergency managers encourage the public to stay updated through local alerts and limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
