Dodge City, KS – A powerful winter storm is set to bring high winds and blizzard conditions to central and southwest Kansas early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Dodge City.
A strong cold front is expected to push through the region late Tuesday night, bringing a rapid temperature drop. As temperatures fall, precipitation will transition from light rain to heavy snow, leading to potentially hazardous travel conditions. NWS warns that the combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall could cause whiteout conditions, especially in areas along and north of KS-96.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect, with high winds expected to reach 50-60 mph. These winds, combined with accumulating snow, may lead to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility. Power outages are also possible due to the strong gusts.
The storm is expected to intensify through Wednesday, with hazardous conditions continuing until at least 7 p.m. CDT. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential disruptions.
The NWS urges Kansans to monitor weather updates and take precautions, including securing loose outdoor objects and ensuring emergency kits are stocked. Road conditions can be checked via the Kansas Department of Transportation before traveling.
