Salina, KS – A severe winter storm has forced the closure of Interstate 70 and multiple highways across western Kansas, causing hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), I-70 is closed in both directions from Exit 244, Hedville Road near Salina, to the Colorado border. The closure comes as accumulating snow and strong winds create blizzard conditions, leading to low visibility and dangerous road conditions.

In addition to I-70, several major highways in northwest Kansas are also closed, including:

  • U.S. 50 from Dodge City to Cimarron.
  • U.S. 283 from Ness to Jetmore.
  • U.S. 281 north of Hoisington.
  • K-4 west of Hoisington.
  • K-96 from Alexander to Ness City.
  • K-156 from Garden City to K-123.
  • U.S. 56 from K-23 to Ensign.
  • U.S. 83 from Scott City to Oakley.
  • U.S. 83 from Sublette to U.S. 190.
  • U.S. 54 from Meade to Plains.
  • K-23 from Dighton to Shields.
  • All highways in Rush County.

KDOT is urging motorists to avoid attempting detours on secondary routes, as conditions remain hazardous. Travelers are advised to delay any non-essential trips until weather conditions improve.

Additional closures may occur as the storm progresses. For updates, motorists can visit KanDrive.gov or call 511 within Kansas (866-511-5368 outside the state).
