Dodge City, Kansas – A swath of western Kansas could face dangerous weather, including baseball-sized hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes, through 8 p.m. tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, there’s a 20% or lower chance for severe thunderstorms to develop between 4 and 8 p.m. in areas including Garden City, Liberal, Ulysses, Scott City, and Tribune. However, if storms form, the atmosphere will be primed for rapid intensification—making for a volatile evening across southwest Kansas.

Hazards include hail large enough to damage vehicles and roofs, wind gusts over 70 mph, and the risk of a few tornadoes. Main highways such as U.S. 83 and U.S. 50 could see brief closures or hazardous driving conditions if storms develop. Residents should stay weather aware and be ready to shelter quickly, especially in mobile homes or rural areas.

This threat marks one of the more significant severe weather set-ups so far this spring for southwest Kansas, reminiscent of similar outbreaks in recent Aprils. Warnings and updates will remain in effect until 8 p.m., with additional advisories possible if storms initiate.
