Wichita, KS – Temperatures will surge into the 90s by Thursday afternoon, creating dangerous fire conditions before a sharp cooldown arrives less than 24 hours later.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, highs will reach between 86°F and 95°F Thursday, following already hot conditions Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. Gusty winds combined with low humidity will elevate fire danger across south-central Kansas, especially during the peak heating hours between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, and El Dorado will see the most intense heat Thursday afternoon, where dry grasses and strong winds could allow fires to spread quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure equipment that could spark flames.
A cold front will move through late Thursday night, dropping temperatures dramatically by Friday. Highs will fall into the upper 50s to low 60s by Friday afternoon, with breezy conditions continuing.
The cooler air will linger into Saturday with highs in the low 60s. Additional advisories may be issued if fire danger intensifies before the front arrives.
