Wichita, KS – Residents across south-central Kansas are being advised to prepare for severe storms late tonight into early Tuesday morning, with the greatest impacts expected between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms capable of producing half-dollar sized hail, 60–65 mph wind gusts, and heavy rainfall are expected to move through the region. The stronger storms could bring localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and along poor drainage routes.
The highest risk zone covers counties from Harper and Pratt eastward into Winfield, while Wichita and Hutchinson sit at the edge of the enhanced risk area. Communities as far north as Salina and east toward Emporia are also within the storm track, though with a lower likelihood of severe conditions.
“Storms are likely to intensify after midnight, with the most active period between 1 a.m. and sunrise,” the weather service stated. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and prepare for possible power outages.
Heavy rainfall may make morning commutes hazardous on Tuesday, with ponding on roads and reduced visibility in stronger downpours. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and avoid flooded roadways.
The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the system and issue warnings as needed. Residents are encouraged to keep weather radios and mobile alerts active overnight for the latest updates.
