Wichita, Kansas – Powerful winds and dry air are setting up dangerous wildfire conditions across central and south-central Kansas Thursday, where a single spark could spread rapidly across dry grasslands.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, southwest wind gusts could exceed 40 mph Thursday afternoon and evening, creating extreme fire danger across parts of central Kansas and very high fire risk across much of south-central Kansas, including the Wichita metro area. Officials warn that any outdoor burning could quickly become uncontrollable.
Communities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Pratt, and Harper are expected to see the strongest winds during the afternoon. The combination of gusty winds, dry vegetation, and warm temperatures could allow fires to spread quickly across open fields and along roadways such as Interstate 135, U.S. 54, and Highway 50.
Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and prevent sparks from equipment or vehicles. Even routine activities such as grilling or parking on dry grass could ignite a fast-moving grass fire under these conditions.
The warm and dry pattern will continue across the region through Friday and Saturday, with highs climbing into the 60s and 70s. Fire danger may remain elevated until stronger moisture returns to the region later in the weekend.
