Wichita, Kansas – Severe storms could rapidly develop Thursday afternoon, bringing the risk of large hail and damaging winds that may impact travel and outdoor plans within hours.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, a Level 2 “Slight Risk” is in place for much of Kansas and surrounding areas, with storms expected to intensify during the afternoon and evening. The primary threats include hail up to 2 inches in diameter and strong wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and creating hazardous driving conditions.
Cities including Wichita, Salina, Topeka, and Manhattan sit within the risk zone, along with major corridors like I-70 and I-35 where storms could reduce visibility and create sudden slowdowns during peak travel times.
Storms may develop quickly and become severe with little warning, especially as instability builds through the late afternoon. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor alerts, and be prepared to move indoors if warnings are issued.
The severe threat is expected to diminish later Thursday night, but additional updates or watches could be issued as conditions evolve.
