Topeka, Kansas – Drivers across central and northeast Kansas have less than 10 hours before snow and ice begin coating highways at noon Sunday, setting up slick pavement through the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from noon Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday for much of north central, northeast and east central Kansas. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow and around a light glaze of ice, enough to create slippery bridges and overpasses overnight.

The advisory includes Shawnee, Riley, Geary, Pottawatomie, Dickinson and Jefferson counties, along with Marshall, Nemaha and Brown counties near the Nebraska border. In Topeka, Manhattan and Junction City, road conditions may deteriorate rapidly after sunset as temperatures hover near freezing. I-70, US-75 and rural county roads could turn slick before daybreak Monday.

Kansas Department of Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out early Monday. Even a thin glaze can reduce traction significantly, especially on elevated surfaces.

Precipitation should taper off by midmorning Monday, but untreated roads may remain icy past 9 a.m. Additional updates or extensions are possible if temperatures drop more than expected overnight.
