Colby, KS – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for northwestern Kansas, including Colby and surrounding areas, until 1 a.m. MDT Wednesday. The National Weather Service warns of the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and possibly a tornado.
As thunderstorms move eastward from Colorado, they are expected to intensify across Kansas. The most significant threats include scattered wind gusts reaching 70 mph and isolated hailstones up to two inches in diameter. A few tornadoes may also develop within these storm systems.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay tuned to local weather reports for updates. The NWS recommends being prepared to seek shelter immediately if a warning is issued.
This severe weather event could lead to dangerous conditions across the region, including downed power lines, tree damage, and reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall. The storms are expected to persist into the early morning hours, posing an ongoing threat overnight.
