Dodge City, Kansas – Damaging winds and large hail could slam parts of western and central Kansas late Thursday as strong to severe thunderstorms build into the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a slight risk for severe storms exists across much of southwest, west central, and central Kansas—including cities like Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend, and Hutchinson. The highest risk period extends from late afternoon through around midnight.
Wind gusts may reach speeds of 60 to 70 mph, capable of downing trees and power lines. Quarter-size hail is also possible, especially within the strongest storms. The primary threat zone includes U.S. Highway 50 and areas along I-70 between Russell and Salina.
Residents in affected areas are urged to secure loose outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and avoid unnecessary travel during storms. Drivers should watch for sudden wind shifts and low visibility on rural highways.
This system is not expected to produce widespread flooding, but isolated downpours could cause brief street flooding in poorly drained areas. It marks one of the more active storm days this month.
More updates will be issued if conditions escalate. Severe weather watches or warnings may follow this afternoon.
