WICHITA, KS – Strong winds and dry conditions will continue Tuesday, increasing the risk of wildfires across central and southern Kansas. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through Tuesday evening, and a High Wind Watch has been issued for late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, south winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, will create critical fire conditions Tuesday. Humidity levels will drop as low as 18%, making outdoor burning highly dangerous. Residents should avoid any outdoor flames and secure loose objects before winds strengthen further overnight.

By late Tuesday, a cold front will push through the region, shifting winds northwest at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching 60 mph by Wednesday morning. This system could bring light rain or even snow to parts of central Kansas, though accumulation is expected to be minimal.

Thursday marks the official start of spring, bringing calmer weather with highs in the 60s and mostly sunny skies. However, another storm system may arrive by the weekend, bringing a chance of showers Saturday and Sunday.

Five-Day Outlook for Wichita:

• Tuesday: Partly sunny, windy, high 82°F

• Wednesday: Rain and wind, high 48°F

• Thursday: Sunny, high 63°F

• Friday: Breezy, high 68°F

• Saturday: Slight chance of rain, high 67°F
