Salina, Kansas – Strong to severe thunderstorms swept across north central Kansas late Monday afternoon, bringing the risk of isolated hail and damaging wind gusts to several communities through 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms developed rapidly over the region with hail up to 1.25 inches and gusts near 60 mph possible. While the overall coverage of severe weather is expected to remain limited, residents in Salina, Concordia, and Russell are urged to stay alert for quickly changing conditions.
Emergency managers recommend parking vehicles in garages to protect against hail and securing outdoor items that could become airborne in strong winds. Drivers along I-70 and US-81 should be ready for sudden downpours, reduced visibility, and localized wind damage this evening.
This system is not expected to prompt a severe thunderstorm watch, but scattered strong storms could cause brief power outages or tree damage.
Storms should move out of the area after sunset, but residents should monitor updates as conditions may change. Additional advisories are possible if storms intensify or expand coverage.
