Dodge City, Kan. – Isolated severe thunderstorms could bring large hail to parts of central and southwest Kansas late Friday afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat targeting areas along and east of U.S. Highway 283.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the best chance for severe activity currently lies in central Kansas—including Hutchinson, Salina, and Emporia—where conditions may favor storm development after 3 p.m. Friday. Areas as far west as Garden City and Dodge City are also in the slight risk zone.

If clouds linger and keep temperatures in the 60s and 70s, the severe threat could shift south and west. Cities like Liberal, Syracuse, Lakin, and Hugoton could see afternoon highs soar into the 80s, boosting storm potential.

While the overall chance of any one location seeing severe weather remains low—10% or less—residents are urged to monitor updates, especially if traveling along major highways like U.S. 54 and I-35. Large hail poses a risk to vehicles and outdoor structures.

Storm chances taper overnight, but additional advisories may follow if conditions change rapidly. Stay weather-aware and review your safety plans heading into the weekend.
