Dodge City, Kan. – A sharp dry line slicing through southwest Kansas could trigger severe thunderstorms as early as Sunday evening, putting Dodge City, Garden City, and nearby areas on alert for damaging winds and large hail.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the dry line—a boundary separating hot, dry air to the west from warm, moist air to the east—is expected to develop over the central Plains Sunday into Monday. Its exact placement will determine where storms initiate, with the potential for rapid intensification along the boundary.
Cities like Liberal, Ulysses, and Cimarron lie west of the projected dry line and may remain hot and dry. However, communities along and east of the line—including Great Bend and Medicine Lodge—could experience powerful afternoon or evening storms. If the line stalls or pushes east, the threat could shift toward central Kansas overnight.
Residents should monitor local alerts and prepare for sudden severe weather, especially those traveling along U.S. Route 50 and U.S. 83. Keep phones charged, avoid unnecessary travel during active storms, and secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high wind.
Additional watches and warnings may be issued as early as Sunday morning. The threat window extends through late Monday.
