Goodland, KS – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across parts of western Kansas and eastern Colorado on Wednesday, April 9, due to critical fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service issued the warning for Fire Weather Zones 001 (Cheyenne), 079 (Dundy), 080 (Hitchcock), 081 (Red Willow), 252 (Yuma), and 253 (Kit Carson), with conditions expected from 11 AM MDT (noon CDT) to 7 PM MDT (8 PM CDT).

According to the NWS, northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are combined with low relative humidity levels as low as 15 percent. Temperatures in the region are expected to range between 70 and 75 degrees. These factors create an environment conducive to rapidly spreading fires, posing significant risks for uncontrolled burn incidents.

Residents and visitors in the affected areas are urged to refrain from outdoor burning and exercise caution near dry brush or debris. With such critical conditions in place, authorities warn that any fires that ignite will likely spread quickly, escalating into dangerous situations. Fire officials are monitoring the conditions closely.
