Western Kansas – 45 mph wind gusts are accelerating wildfire spread through Saturday evening, creating dangerous fire conditions across the region and threatening rapid ignition along roadways and open fields.
Strong south winds will increase through the day, sustaining speeds between 20 and 30 mph with frequent gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph. At the same time, relative humidity is expected to drop into the 15% to 20% range during peak afternoon heating, creating an environment where fires can start easily and spread quickly.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for all western Kansas counties, including Finney, Ford, Seward, and Ellis counties. Cities such as Dodge City, Liberal, Garden City, Hays, and Syracuse will experience the most critical conditions during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Any spark—whether from vehicles along U.S. 50, agricultural equipment, or outdoor burning—could ignite fast-moving grassfires. Fires that start may spread rapidly across dry fields and rangeland, especially in open areas with strong wind alignment.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that could produce sparks. Fire crews may face difficult containment conditions due to wind-driven spread.
The highest fire danger will persist through sunset Saturday before winds gradually ease overnight. Elevated fire risk may continue into Sunday if dry conditions linger, and additional warnings could be issued.
