Winfield, Kansas – A small area southwest of Winfield saw Kansas’s most intense rainfall in June, with a staggering 16.00 inches recorded at a local CoCoRaHS station — nearly 40% of the region’s annual average.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the rainfall total came from a station located six miles southwest of Winfield. The amount is the highest reported in the state for the month and underscores the unusually wet conditions that hit south-central Kansas throughout June.
Localized flooding was reported across Cowley County, with low-lying roads becoming temporarily impassable and ditches remaining waterlogged for days. Rural property owners have reported damage to driveways, fences, and small bridges.
Residents are urged to remain alert for continued soil saturation and the potential for flash flooding if more storms develop. Emergency officials recommend clearing culverts, avoiding flooded roadways, and keeping storm drains unblocked.
June’s deluge ranks among the wettest months in recent memory for this region — nearly doubling totals seen during similar June storm outbreaks in 2019 and 2016.
More rainfall is possible this week as summer storms remain in the forecast. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service for any new alerts.
