Hastings, Nebraska – Gardeners and growers across central Nebraska and north-central Kansas should prepare for a cold snap early Saturday as temperatures are expected to dip near freezing, triggering a widespread Frost Advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the advisory covers over 40 counties, including the Tri-Cities region—Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney—from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Saturday. Lows between 33 and 37 degrees could result in patchy to widespread frost, depending on how sharply temps drop overnight.
Cities including York, Holdrege, Minden, Red Cloud, and parts of north-central Kansas like Phillipsburg and Beloit are also within the advisory area. Localized valleys and sheltered spots may see the worst of the frost, potentially damaging unprotected plants and early crops.
Residents are urged to cover or bring in sensitive vegetation tonight, especially in rural and low-lying areas. While not a hard freeze, even light frost can harm seedlings and blooming flowers.
The advisory may be updated if colder-than-expected temperatures materialize. Another round of alerts is possible if conditions persist into early next week.
