Goodland, Kansas – Sweltering heat is bearing down on northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, with heat index values soaring up to 106°F through Friday evening. Residents in Decatur, Norton, Sheridan, Graham, Gove, Rawlins, Thomas, and Logan counties in Kansas—and Red Willow and Hitchcock counties in Nebraska—are under consecutive heat advisories, putting vulnerable groups and outdoor workers at risk for heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, the current heat advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday, with a second advisory kicking in from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for many of the same areas, including McCook, Oberlin, Colby, and Oakley. Emergency officials are urging everyone to take extra precautions: limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, wear loose, light clothing, and check on neighbors, seniors, and pets.

Major roadways like US-36, US-83, and I-70 could see slower traffic as drivers cope with dangerous car interiors—authorities warn never to leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly. Cooling shelters are open in several city centers, and residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and move outdoor plans to early morning or late evening.

The intense heat is expected to ease by Friday night, but updates from the National Weather Service may follow if conditions worsen.
