STOCKTON, Kan. – A mild earthquake briefly shook parts of northern Kansas late Sunday night, with reports of light tremors reaching communities near the Nebraska border. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 2.8 quake at 7:58 p.m. local time, centered about nine kilometers north-northwest of Stockton at a depth of roughly 9 kilometers.

According to the USGS, no damage or injuries have been reported. The quake’s shallow depth allowed residents in Rooks County and portions of southern Nebraska to feel a brief jolt, though it remained well below the threshold for structural impact.

Minor seismic activity occasionally occurs in north-central Kansas, though Sunday night’s event was notable for its proximity to populated areas. Local emergency officials said the tremor serves as a reminder that even small earthquakes can startle residents unaccustomed to ground shaking.

Residents are encouraged to check for any minor property shifts or cracks and to review emergency plans, particularly in rural areas where communication systems can be limited.

The USGS continues to monitor the region for aftershocks, though none have been detected as of early Monday.
