Kansas City, MO – Strong winds sweeping across the metro today are creating hazardous travel conditions and an elevated fire risk, prompting officials to urge caution through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. for much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri, including the Kansas City metro. South to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 mph early and potentially near 50 mph as winds shift to the west later today.
At the same time, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. due to strong winds and very low humidity. Any fires that start could spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Drivers along I-70, I-35, I-435, and open stretches of Highway 71 may experience difficult crosswinds, especially in high-profile vehicles. Loose holiday decorations, trash bins, and light outdoor items could be blown around, with isolated tree limb damage possible.
Rain chances increase briefly early today, followed by clearing skies and sharply cooler air tonight. Conditions improve significantly Friday, with sunshine and lighter winds setting up a quieter weekend.
Looking ahead, the overall pattern turns calmer early next week. Christmas Eve on Wednesday is currently trending dry and mild across the Kansas City area, offering favorable conditions for holiday travel and last-minute preparations. Wind and fire weather concerns ease tonight, with no additional hazardous weather expected beyond today’s impacts.
