Kansas City, Kansas-Missouri Border – Snow could begin impacting travel along I-70 and I-35 by 6 a.m. Sunday, with a 30 to 50 percent chance that at least 2 inches accumulates across eastern Kansas and western Missouri before 6 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, a developing winter system may spread accumulating snow from central and eastern Kansas through northern Missouri and into the Midwest between early Sunday and daybreak Monday. The highest probabilities for 2 inches or more currently align near the Kansas-Missouri state line, including Kansas City, St. Joseph and Columbia. Farther west toward Topeka and central Kansas, chances decrease but remain under close watch.
If moderate snowfall rates develop during the Sunday morning travel window, visibility could drop below one mile, and untreated roads may turn slushy or snow-covered. Elevated roadways, including bridges along I-435, I-470 and key interchanges near downtown Kansas City, are most vulnerable to early accumulation.
Kansas Department of Transportation and MoDOT crews are reviewing staffing plans and monitoring pavement temperatures ahead of the potential onset. Small shifts in the storm track could nudge heavier totals slightly north or south of the metro.
Residents should prepare by checking tire tread, topping off windshield washer fluid and allowing extra braking distance if travel becomes necessary. Additional winter weather advisories could be issued by Saturday as confidence increases in snowfall placement and intensity through early Monday.
