KANSAS CITY, MO – Thick gray skies and falling snow mark the first major winter event of December across the Kansas City metro, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. CST. Forecasters warn of 2 to 4 inches of accumulation, enough to make roads slick and slow for commuters through the evening drive.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill reports steady snow continuing through early afternoon, tapering later in the day as colder air locks in behind the system. Visibility has already dropped below a mile in parts of Wyandotte, Platte, and Jackson counties, where light winds allow snow to stick quickly to untreated surfaces.
Travel will be hazardous along I-70, I-35, and Route 71, particularly on bridges and overpasses where freezing slush develops first. Even after snowfall ends, refreezing conditions tonight could create patchy black ice as temperatures dip into the upper teens.
Tuesday brings a quiet break — mostly sunny skies, highs near 35°F — followed by another cold push midweek. Lows Wednesday and Thursday night may plunge into the single digits, marking the coldest air of the young season.
Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking. Keep an emergency kit and scraper ready, as gusts may briefly reduce visibility near rural stretches and open fields.
