Springfield, MO — A tornado watch remains in effect for parts of eastern Kansas and western Missouri until noon CDT Wednesday, as a fast-moving line of severe storms sweeps across the region.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes areas across far southeast Kansas, central and southwest Missouri, and adjacent parts of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. Forecasters warn of a potential for tornadoes, including the possibility of a strong tornado, as well as damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph and hail up to 2 inches in diameter.
Cities within the watch zone include Springfield, Joplin, Fayetteville, and Poteau, with communities along the I-44 corridor urged to monitor conditions closely. Embedded supercells within the storm line could rapidly intensify, increasing the tornado threat during the morning commute.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, remain indoors when warnings are issued, and have multiple ways to receive alerts, especially if traveling.
This system follows a trend of early spring severe weather typical of the southern Plains and lower Midwest. Officials emphasize vigilance through midday, as storms are expected to exit the area by early afternoon.
