Topeka, Kansas – A wave of light snow and ice is set to spread across parts of Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska beginning Sunday afternoon, creating slippery roads and travel concerns into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Topeka, Kansas City/Pleasant Hill and Omaha/Valley, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from midday or mid-afternoon Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday across northeast and central Kansas, northwest Missouri and southeast Nebraska. Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow in most areas, along with light ice accumulations ranging from a glaze to one-tenth of an inch.
In Kansas, cities including Topeka, Manhattan and Junction City could see slick conditions develop by Sunday evening. Across northwest Missouri, St. Joseph, Maryville and Cameron may experience up to a tenth of an inch of ice, increasing the risk of hazardous travel. In southeast Nebraska, Falls City, Auburn and Pawnee City are likely to see light snow Sunday followed by freezing drizzle early Monday.
State transportation agencies urge drivers to slow down and allow extra time, especially for the Monday morning commute. Travelers can check road conditions by calling 511 in Kansas and Nebraska or visiting traveler.modot.org in Missouri.
Precipitation should taper by mid-morning Monday, but slick spots may linger. Additional advisories could follow if icing becomes more widespread across the region.
