Kansas City, Missouri – Communities along the Kansas–Missouri border could face renewed winter travel disruptions as a late-January pattern increases the likelihood of accumulating snow across the central Plains and lower Midwest.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the Kansas–Missouri border region is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling a higher chance for one or more organized winter systems tracking through the region. Colder air is expected to remain in place, favoring snow over rain during this window.

In the Kansas City metro area, including downtown Kansas City, Overland Park, and Independence, temperatures trending below normal support snow as the dominant precipitation type. That could lead to slick conditions along Interstates 70, 35, 435, and 670, particularly during overnight and early morning commute periods.

Across eastern Kansas, including Johnson and Wyandotte counties, snow may arrive in multiple rounds, increasing the potential for cumulative impacts on local roads and highways. Similar conditions are possible across western Missouri, where untreated secondary roads could become hazardous during steadier snowfall.

The Kansas Department of Transportation and Missouri Department of Transportation urge residents to monitor road conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and keep vehicles stocked with winter emergency supplies. With cold air expected to persist, snow that falls may linger between systems.

More detailed timing and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer impacts becoming available by early next week.
