Kansas City, Missouri – Scorching heat and high humidity are blanketing Kansas City and much of northern Missouri, pushing the heat index to a sweltering 105 degrees and raising health concerns through 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for east central and northeast Kansas and a broad swath of Missouri, including Atchison, St. Joseph, Kirksville, Platte City, and Kansas City metro. The advisory warns that the intense combination of heat and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses for those exposed for prolonged periods.

Communities across Johnson, Wyandotte, Jackson, Buchanan, and Cass counties are expected to feel the brunt, especially during the afternoon hours. Schools and outdoor workers should take extra precautions. Health officials urge residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Vulnerable groups—such as young children, seniors, and those without access to cooling—should be checked on frequently.

Drivers are also cautioned about heat hazards inside parked vehicles. This multi-day event marks one of the region’s hottest stretches of summer, echoing similar advisories from July 2023.

The Heat Advisory is set to expire at 7 p.m. Thursday, but additional alerts may follow if oppressive conditions persist.
