Wichita, Kansas – A prolonged stretch of dangerous cold is setting up across Kansas, with wind chills dropping low enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes beginning early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita and Topeka, Cold Weather Advisories are in effect for much of central, south central, southeast, and north-central Kansas from Friday morning through at least Sunday, with some areas extending into Monday. Wind chills are expected to fall as low as 20 to 22 below zero, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

Cities including Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, McPherson, Newton, El Dorado, Emporia, Manhattan, Topeka, Coffeyville, and Parsons will all experience dangerous cold, with the greatest frostbite risk occurring before sunrise and again after sunset. Even brief outdoor exposure without full winter protection can quickly become hazardous, particularly for commuters, students, and outdoor workers.

Emergency managers urge residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers including hats, gloves, and face coverings, and keep pets indoors. Those without reliable heat and older residents are especially vulnerable, and neighbors are encouraged to check in on them.

Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect through the weekend, and additional extensions are possible if Arctic air lingers longer than expected.
