Sherman County, KS – A severe dust storm sweeping through northwest Kansas led to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 70, leaving eight people dead and several others injured. Authorities continue to investigate the collision that involved over 50 vehicles and forced road closures in both directions.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:22 p.m. on March 14 near milepost 28 in Sherman County. High winds carried dust from Colorado into the area, drastically reducing visibility and causing traffic to slow. As vehicles struggled to navigate the conditions, multiple collisions ensued.

Emergency responders from the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, Goodland Police Department, and regional fire and EMS services rushed to the scene. Injured individuals were transported to medical facilities across the region, while authorities worked to clear the wreckage.

Governor Laura Kelly expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged drivers to remain cautious amid changing weather conditions. “My thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event,” Kelly said. “I encourage all motorists to remain vigilant and prepared for further weather events.”

The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) continues to investigate the crash. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 between Goodland (milepost 19) and Colby (milepost 53) will remain closed until further notice.

For those attempting to reach loved ones who may have been traveling in the area, the Kansas Highway Patrol has set up an emergency contact line at (785) 827-4437. Additionally, the Red Cross has established shelters for affected travelers and families seeking information.

Motorists are advised to monitor local weather updates and check KanDrive for the latest road conditions before traveling through western and central Kansas.
