Wichita, KS – Strong winds and dry conditions are setting the stage for dangerous fire weather across Kansas this weekend. Wind gusts could reach 70 mph, and a Red Flag Warning is in effect Saturday, posing extreme fire danger in Wichita and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a High Wind Warning is also in place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, affecting Chase, Sedgwick, and Sumner counties. Winds from the southwest at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, may cause downed power lines and hazardous travel, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose objects. Any fires that develop could spread rapidly and become uncontrollable. The Flint Hills region faces the greatest fire risk.

Looking ahead, Sunday will be calmer with highs in the mid-60s, but fire danger remains. Monday and Tuesday will bring even warmer temperatures near 80°F, with gusty winds continuing, elevating fire risks. A slight chance of showers arrives Wednesday, offering some relief.

Officials advise staying indoors during peak winds, using caution on roadways, and preparing for possible power outages. Avoid Interstate 135 if traveling during high winds.
