Topeka, Kansas – A sweltering dome of heat will blanket Kansas through at least 7 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values climbing as high as 107°F across much of the state, threatening public health and disrupting daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Topeka and Wichita, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for over 50 counties, from Manhattan and Lawrence to Wichita, Salina, and Coffeyville. The high humidity, combined with temperatures near 100°F, will continue to create dangerously oppressive conditions day and night.

Residents in cities like Emporia, Hutchinson, and El Dorado should prepare for elevated risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while all Kansans are advised to avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours. Air-conditioned spaces will be critical, especially for the elderly, children, and pets.

Major roadways such as I-70 and I-35 will remain open, but drivers should stay hydrated and never leave passengers in parked vehicles, where interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The heat wave may extend into late next week if current patterns persist. Further advisories are possible.
