Dodge City, Kansas – High pressure is locking in sweltering conditions across Kansas today, sending afternoon temperatures soaring to 98–102° from Dodge City to Great Bend and Hays. Heat indices will top 105° east and southeast of Dodge City, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, elevated humidity is compounding the heat, and a heat advisory remains likely through Sunday evening. Areas including Medicine Lodge, Ashland, Kingman, and Pratt are facing some of the highest risk, with “feels like” temperatures peaking between 104° and 108° by late afternoon. Breezy south winds of 15–25 mph may provide brief relief, but will not offset the heat’s dangers.
Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors and pets. Outdoor workers and those recreating outside should take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. High temperatures are expected to continue into Monday, prolonging the threat of heat illness.
This weekend marks some of the hottest weather so far this summer in western Kansas. Further advisories and updates remain possible as the heat persists into early next week.
