Wichita, Kansas – Dangerous heat and isolated storms are expected across Kansas this weekend, with southeast counties facing brief but intense afternoon thunderstorms capable of 50 mph wind gusts and heavy rain. Heat index values could soar into the triple digits Saturday and remain dangerously high through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, heat indices of 100° to 105° are forecast for much of Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas today, including Barton, Sedgwick, Harvey, and Montgomery counties. Sunday and Monday are expected to feel even hotter, with widespread indices reaching up to 107°, especially in areas like Wichita, Salina, and El Dorado. Winds will pick up Sunday afternoon with gusts near 25 mph, compounding heat stress risks.

Storm chances are minimal over the weekend but are expected to increase Wednesday night and remain possible into Friday. No severe weather is anticipated at this time, but the public should remain alert for updates.

Residents should limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals. Spotter activation is not expected, but local agencies remain on standby.
