Dodge City, Kansas – Southwest Kansas residents should prepare for oppressive heat next week, with “feels-like” temperatures climbing near 100°F in several cities, especially on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the heat index will soar into the upper 90s across much of the region starting Monday afternoon, with peak discomfort expected between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day. Liberal, Larned, Med Lodge, and Pratt may see heat index values hit 100°F as early as Tuesday afternoon.
Elkhart, Garden City, and Dodge City will face prolonged exposure to 90+ heat index levels through Friday evening. Overnight temperatures will offer limited relief, hovering in the 70s across most areas.
The high heat index increases the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. NWS officials urge residents to limit strenuous activities during peak heat hours, wear light-colored clothing, and drink plenty of water or electrolyte beverages.
This early-season heat wave echoes similar June warm-ups in 2021 and 2016, when emergency services responded to a spike in heat-related illnesses.
Advisories may be issued if heat index values exceed 100°F multiple days in a row. Residents are encouraged to check for updated warnings through the week.
