Dodge City, KS – Residents of southwest Kansas should prepare for a potential severe weather outbreak starting late Tuesday night, with risks of damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Marginal Risk alert for areas along and east of Highway 283, warning of possible 60+ mph winds and hail larger than one inch. This weather could pose significant hazards for drivers and property, urging residents to secure outdoor items and monitor weather updates closely.
According to the NWS, storms are expected to intensify overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday, bringing gusty winds capable of downing trees and power lines. The greatest risk includes Dodge City and surrounding towns east of Highway 283, where high winds may create dangerous road conditions. Motorists, particularly those driving high-profile vehicles, should exercise caution due to potential strong crosswinds along highways, which could lead to difficult driving conditions.
In addition to Tuesday night’s storm, the broader forecast indicates a turbulent start to the week. Monday and Tuesday will see warm and windy conditions, with temperatures reaching highs near 89°F and 85°F, respectively. Winds are expected to peak Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph, posing an added risk of blowing dust across open areas. Visibility may become limited, particularly in rural areas, impacting travel along Highway 283 and surrounding roads.
Wednesday morning may bring lingering showers before the weather clears. Temperatures will cool down, with a low of 33°F expected Wednesday night, followed by sunny and calm conditions on Thursday. Highs will reach around 61°F, providing a brief respite before breezy weather returns on Friday.
