Goodland, KS – Hazardous fog is expected to reduce visibility across portions of northwest Kansas early Wednesday, creating difficult driving conditions before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 AM Wednesday, covering Decatur, Norton, Sheridan, Graham, and Gove counties. Visibility may fall to one-quarter mile in many areas, with localized pockets dropping to one-half mile at times.
Forecasters warn that some spots could experience patches of freezing fog, which may produce slick elevated surfaces such as bridges, overpasses, and untreated ramps. This creates an added hazard for commuters traveling along Highway 36, I-70, and surrounding rural routes.
According to the NWS, dense fog formed overnight as temperatures dipped near freezing and moisture pooled close to the ground. Conditions will likely worsen around sunrise, when cooling peaks and saturation increases.
Drivers should expect sudden visibility drops and extended braking distances. Commuters heading through Oberlin, Hill City, Quinter, Hoxie, and smaller communities may experience slowdowns, especially in low-lying areas or near river valleys where fog tends to deepen.
Visibility is expected to gradually improve late Wednesday morning as temperatures warm and fog lifts. Nonetheless, early drivers are urged to slow down, keep headlights on, and leave additional space between vehicles.
Motorists should monitor updates throughout the morning in case freezing fog becomes more widespread.
