Wichita, Kansas – A multi-day flood threat looms over southeast Kansas as heavy rains begin Friday evening, potentially swamping roads, rivers, and low-lying areas through Memorial Day.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Flood Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Monday for Allen, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery, and Labette counties. Rainfall totals could lead to excessive runoff, increasing the risk of flooding along rivers and creeks, especially in flood-prone areas.
Residents in Parsons, Coffeyville, Iola, and Independence should prepare for possible street flooding and rising water near homes and businesses. The region may see several rounds of rainfall, and already saturated ground could worsen the situation.
Drivers should avoid water-covered roads, and those living near streams or rivers are urged to move valuables to higher ground and stay alert for future Flood Warnings. Power outages and road closures are possible if flooding becomes severe.
Flood risks are expected to linger into Monday evening, with more advisories possible as rain totals develop.
