Wichita, KS – The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood watch for much of central, south central, and southeast Kansas, effective from 1 a.m. Tuesday through Tuesday afternoon.
According to the NWS, several rounds of thunderstorms are expected overnight and into Tuesday, producing heavy rain across a wide swath of the state. Rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches are likely, with locally higher amounts possible.
The flood watch includes major population centers such as Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, El Dorado, Parsons, and Coffeyville, as well as surrounding counties from Russell and Lincoln in central Kansas to Labette and Montgomery in the southeast.
Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall could lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Urban areas may also experience flooding in streets and underpasses if heavy rain develops quickly.
Residents are urged to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for the possibility of flood warnings Tuesday. The NWS cautions drivers not to enter flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” officials said, stressing that two feet of water can sweep away most vehicles.
The flood watch will remain in effect through at least Tuesday afternoon, September 23.
